About Me

Call me Ishmael.

Actually, scratch that - I read that book in seventh grade when I was obsessed with whales and sharks and still didn't like it.  Let's try again.

"And this also," said Marlow suddenly, "has been one of the dark places of the earth."

The horror, the horror!  (That one's for you Doc Scheid!)

Well, how about we just start at the beginning.  Seems like a logical place to start, huh?

I was born and raised in the great state of Wisconsin (or God's Country, as it will henceforth be known).  I was doomed to geekdom from an early age by my father when he, being a Physics professor, would read from his textbooks to get my sister and I to fall asleep.  In his words, "I figured it worked for all of my students - why wouldn't it work for babies?"  Eventually, after unsuccessful bids at the NFL and Major League Baseball, I decided to become an aerospace engineer (that's "rocket scientist" in the vernacular). I started my career at NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia, where I spent 5 wonderful years getting to basically do my dream job. In 2012, my wife Sarah and I moved back to Michigan where we met and I got a job working for a private company named CD-adapco (since acquired by Siemens). We now have three wonderful and very spirited children that keep us busy.

And that's about it.  There's nothing particularly interesting or noteworthy about me (us), but I've always enjoyed writing and never got around to doing much of it.  I'm hoping that starting this blog will sort of lead to more regular writing of some kind, but that remains to be seen.  I don't really have a particular purpose at this time: I'm just going to muse about different topics and post things that I find interesting.  A theme may develop as time goes by, but we'll see.

Oh, and I should probably end with a disclaimer.  I am not really a message board/blogroll kind of guy - most of my Internet browsing concerns ESPN, SI, facebook, and tvtropes.org (WARNING: do NOT go to tvtropes unless you have a free day or so!).  So, in the unlikely event that people actually start reading this blog, I'm not sure how I plan to deal with that.  I am all for lively, meaningful discussion and debate.  I do know, however, that I will DEFINITELY delete or block anyone making insulting, rude, or generally negative comments here.  To quote my dad again, "This (blog) is not a democracy, it is a benevolent dictatorship - sometimes more benevolent than others!"  Please, don't waste my time by trolling (unless it's for lake trout - yum!) or otherwise being a pest.
